What Causes This?
Not the crease, but

the strength to open

A drooping eyelid (ptosis) is what happens when the muscle that lifts the upper eyelid — the levator palpebrae superioris — weakens and the upper lid sits lower than it should. In an eye that opens normally, the upper lid covers the iris by only 1–2 mm; where there is ptosis it comes further down and covers more of it.

When that muscle is weak, the eyebrow and the forehead muscle tend to be recruited to lift the lid instead, and repeating that all day long brings other things with it.

  • The eyebrow moves noticeably between closing and opening the eyes
  • Deep horizontal lines form across the forehead
  • The eyes feel as though they droop further as the evening goes on
  • Headaches, tired eyes, and a habitually sleepy look
  • Eyes that look uneven because each one opens with a different strength

If the cause lies in a weakened muscle, that is where we begin.

Asymmetric eyelid drooping can occasionally signal an underlying condition. If you notice a sudden change, please consult an ophthalmologist.

Jayeonsan Eye Shape Acupuncture,
what makes it different

Rather than holding the lid in place with threads or an incision, it is designed to build the strength of your own muscle.

Restoring tone in the muscle
01

Restoring
muscle tone

Acupuncture at points associated with strengthening the weakened muscle that lifts the upper eyelid, designed to build the strength with which the eye opens. No medication, no thread embedding and no massage.

02

Stimulating the nerve

By stimulating the nerve supply to a weakened eyelid muscle, the aim is to encourage the muscle to do the work itself. Nothing pulls from the outside; the intention is that the muscle rises on its own.

Building the strength
with which the eye opens

Because nothing is held in place by threads or an incision and it is your own muscle that becomes stronger, the approach addresses not only how the eye looks but what lies behind it. Many clients find that more of the iris is visible when the eye is open, while the expression still reads as their own.

What to Expect

From consultation to follow-up

Measuring the strength with which the eye opens

Measuring how the eye opens

STEP 01

We check how far the eyebrow moves between closing and opening the eyes.

Assessing left-right asymmetry

Assessing left–right asymmetry

STEP 02

A difference in how strongly each eye opens, and any difference in eye level, are read against a reference line.

Acupuncture at the relevant points

Acupuncture treatment

STEP 03

Needles are placed precisely at the acupuncture points associated with strengthening the muscle that lifts the upper eyelid.

Reviewing progress between sessions

STEP 04

We follow how much of the iris is visible from session to session and carry the plan forward accordingly.

How It Compares

A drooping eyelid —
what the options are

Whether the skin of the eyelid has become lax, or the muscle has weakened, changes which option fits. The table below sets out how each one works.

Signs You May Notice

Have a look
in the mirror now

If even one of the points below applies to you, it may be worth having the condition of the muscles around the eye looked at.

  • Looking straight into the mirror, a third or more of the iris is covered
  • Opening the eyes calls on the eyebrow or forehead muscles, and lines appear across the forehead
  • There is a habit of raising the chin in order to open the eyes
  • The eyelids look heavy, and people say you always look sleepy
  • Looking straight ahead, the eyelids make the field of vision feel restricted
  • There is little sense of power in the eyelid when opening the eyes
Why It Is Worth Addressing

Not only
a cosmetic matter

A drooping eyelid (ptosis) brings not only the aesthetic question of a sleepy-looking expression, but functional difficulties alongside it.

  • Increasing fatigue — lifting the eyelid with the forehead muscle all day long deepens the lines across the forehead and can bring headaches and a sense of tiredness
  • Changes in posture — as the forehead muscle tires in turn, the chin tends to be raised to clear the field of vision, and posture shifts with it
  • Reduced vision — where a drooping eyelid obstructs the field of vision, amblyopia or astigmatism may develop
One-to-One Direct Care

From assessment to treatment,
by the Director in person

Even with the same concern, the position of the muscle and how far it has developed differ from person to person. The Director checks the change at every session in person and adjusts the acupuncture points accordingly.
